An Open Letter to Sandra Fluke of Georgetown LSRJ

Dear Sandra,

Way to go! Over the weeks, we have watched with delight and admiration as you deftly and thoughtfully presented the case for access to affordable contraception to our political leaders and to the country. You are an example of the extraordinary power of young women’s voices in advocacy and an inspiration to us all as reproductive rights activists.

The comments directed at you are just the latest in a series of legislative measures and media commentary that impugn women’s decision-making abilities. In this toxic environment, young women and girls sorely need role models who are strong, intelligent, well-informed, level-headed, and charismatic in the face of attack. By standing up to the Republican Congress and Rush Limbaugh, you have become a role model for girls across this country. We admire how you have faced the media storm head on, harnessing it into an opportunity to affirmatively present the case for reproductive justice to the country.

We enthusiastically hope that you consider running for office in the future (or immediate present — some of us would be happy to help launch your campaign!). We look forward to being part of the new wave of reproductive justice activism with you. You make us proud to call ourselves your fellow LSRJ members!

Sincerely,

Harvard Law Students for Reproductive Justice & Northeastern Law Students for Reproductive Justice
